If I get asked to donate to a charity I tend to do research on the organization before I jump in. I want to know where the money goes or how it gets spent

Donate, yes. But will choose a better way to donate than the ones in the news.

there are certain charities I donate too.
" I'm on the frontline, don't worry I'll be fine, the story is just beginning. I say goodbye to my weakness, so long to the regret, and now I see the world through diamond eyes" Shinedown

I donate to certain local Alzheimer's research and Diabetes as well as cancer research. I used to head/chair an event when I lived in Kansas that made it possible for people with mental and physical handicaps to do outdoor winter and summer sports! The person would be chosen based on their story and need and receive an all expense paid trip for them and at least one member of their family to Snowmass Colorado for 5 days. There they would learn to ski no matter what their disability. No arms, legs? They'll make it happen! It was amazing...As I was starting my 4 year run with them the war in Iraq was revving up and the soldiers were coming home wounded so we extended the program to them specifically! It was awe inspiring to see a blind person ski down a hill! The exhilaration of being able to that after years of thinking they wouldn't be able to!
When I started the charity ball or gala was making about 11,000.00 a year after the expenses of the party! By my 4th yr I grew that number to roughly 150,000.00! I was on the board for two of those years and it was 100% volunteer! Of course the instructors were paid as well as the 1-2 full time admin, but the board members including the President was volunteer! The facilities were gorgeous! It wasn't easy to raise that kind of money! There were only two charity events a year and I was in charge of the Kansas one! Other donations were from major companies like Boeing who donated all air travel as well as money and North face who donated apparel as well as major sports equipment companies that donated all sorts of modified equipment depending on the disability!
I am super proud of that work I did and very proud of that organization! Once I moved back to Mass and saw there were several excellent organizations here that did the same thing I decided to not pursue it for this area! Now I work mostly with small local charities and casino nights and small benefits!
