Default Can you trust people online?

recently I have been through something that has made me mistrust many of my online relationships.. I am beginning to believe you can't trust very many people.. I have a very small core group of people who I do trust.. and the others I have a very, very hard time when it comes to that... what are your thoughts... can you trust... or is it almost impossible?

i have a tendancy to trust , until such time that is proved to be not justified.

i am what i am , what you see online , you get in real life.

what if you thought you were talking to a man.. then you find out that you were talking to perhaps up to 3 different people.. that one of your online "friends" (someone who told everyone you were friends and she even had a picture of us on her page) knew that it was a hoax and never said a word about it to me.. what if you thought you were falling in love, you may have found someone who wanted what you wanted.. someone who told you that they couldn't wait to spend the rest of their life with you.. then found out none of it was real?

how do you trust anyone after that?

it must be very very hard indeed , my heart goes out to you.
and i am sure i would be the same as you.

but hopefully you can slowly begin to trust again .

i think there is far more decent people out there than those who would do you over.

I am afraid to say I don't think I can.. I have a few people I trust with anything and everything.. but for the most part I do not trust a soul..

the problem I have is that I am way to open about myself.. I make myself vulnerable.. nope.. trust must be earned.. and so far not many are making my list..

No, no, NO! A resounding no! Yes, true friendships and relationships can develop online, but unless you actually live near them and can meet them in person to judge their persona away from the net, DON'T trust them.

If I sound harsh, I speak from a very unfortunate and painful experience.

I think the old Cold War mantra is equally applicable to online relationships: Trust but verify. Then, once you learned that you can't trust them for any reason, you jettison them...only because you can't launch nuclear missiles at them instead.
